9/11 Memorial in NYC: 10 Tips for the visit

 

This visit to the 9/11 Memorial required some serious planning, you cannot just walk in and expect to get in.  Since a few of you expressed interest in my visit last year, I’m sharing my notes for all to see, so my good research is not wasted!

1. Definitely book tix ahead online – then you will have no wait to get in.

2. We loved the 9/11 Memorial app, very useful inside the museum. Robert DeNiro narrates it! He was excellent. It’s free, and big MB, so download it before you go(took about 15 Minutes to download on my phone). Don’t waste time downloading it at the museum. 

3. We did the tour for outdoors, the Memorial aka The Void (their term). Our guide was terrific, learned a lot about those pools and the surrounding area. Lots of secret codes, roses, things happening that are curious. The guide breaks it down nicely. Suggestion: take the outdoor tour early in day before you enter museum. Once you go in, you cannot exit and return. (Too bad about that, we would like to have taken a break and returned later. )

4. Films: they show THE FIRST PITCH film only once a day at noon. Make sure you arrive in time to get in there, it was fascinating…we watched all three special films in main auditorium from 12-1:15. 

5. Don’t miss the REBIRTHING film, it plays all day in a different theater.

6. The museum café was pricey and not up to par IMHO, sorry I didn’t pack lunch. So definitely bring lunch, snacks, whatever you need for a 4-6 hour day.

7. And finally, it was NOT as emotional as I thought it would be – the upliftment comes from seeing ALL THE GOOD that people did to help each other…that made me ferklempt. The exquisite levels of giving and sacrifice were ASTOUNDING!   I learned so much, even though I was living and working in NYC when this happened.

8. Easy access from the 4/5 Express train to Fulton St, grateful for the NYC SUBWAYS! They are awesome!

9. After another marathon of walking, we went up to Chinatown for soothing foot massage. I have a great place at 107 Mott Street, clean, great value and they are awesome. You can just walk in, no reservation needed.

10. Lunch or Dinner suggestion: Right near the foot massage place, we had a delicious dinner at Little Shanghai, 144 Mulberry St. Yum. No reservations. 

The trauma of 9/11 still cannot be grasped – I realized after the 5 hours that it is just impossible to imagine what it’s like to run from an exploding building while chunks of furniture, restaurant trays, other debris and parts of airplane are falling out of the sky on your way… this horror was just off the charts. 

Yet there was SO MUCH BEAUTY in the recovery and “rebirth” process…which adds to the mystery of the need for contrast, paradox and tension in this Universe.  

 Triple OY! Loved it, lots of contrast, deeply moving, ultimately inspiring. Highly recommend!

I ran my first 5K race in Woodstock, Vermont!

My husband and I were planning a trip to Woodstock, VT, so I was looking to see what’s happening up there August 2-4, 2019…

When I saw that there was a 5K race Saturday morning, 9 am, I knew I would be there. Plus, the race took place at the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park, so this was a no brainer for me.

8/3/19 was a perfect weather day for this race, at 65 degrees, no humidity, no bugs, yes, it was exhilarating! I felt light as a feather!

I’m going to run many more 5Ks as I get ready for the next level…so grateful💕

Other highlights of the weekend included visiting the alpacas…

I love these alpacas, such sweet faces!

 

Woodstock has many charming nooks and crannies. Favorite dinner: The Daily Catch. Sublime seafood! Favorite stores: the Unicorn, and Simon Pearce in Quechee, where you can see fascinating glass blowers at work on lower level of the store, plus upstairs there is a nice lunch spot next to a waterfall!)

After brunch, Gary assisted an elderly woman with her plants✨

All along the streets of Woodstock are gorgeous flowers!

Woodstock and Quechee are so warm and welcoming, I’ll be back🐾

For Pi Day…Exodus 3:14 brings it home!

Exodus 3:14 – Mysterious coincidence or deeper meaning?  Exodus 3 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.  Moses double checks, “Who is this Unidentified Caller?  When my clan asks me, who can I say is leading us out of Egypt?”  G-d responds, “I AM THAT I AM.”  This is a core teaching, instructing us that we come from this phenomenon of Oneness, and remain connected to IT, without ever being able to fully comprehend IT.

Plus, when we, as tiny creators, want to manifest things in our lives, we can use the I AM code to transform ourselves and our surroundings.  For example, each day, with the help of  the mysterious energy of the Universe, aka G-d, Source Energy, Higher Power, Angels, whatever works for you:

  • I AM becoming slim and healthy.
  • I AM becoming more prosperous and generous.
  • I AM decluttering my library, desk and file drawers.
  • I AM supporting positive causes that will restore balance and sanity to the world.

Yes, we can “I AM”  ourselves to shift and  transform in the direction we seek to move. There is an art to applying the I AM code to our lives.  Stay tuned to the flow of this learning around you.

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), we talk about the “Cope Ahead skill.”  This is the process of visualizing the preferred outcome.   So instead of having anticipatory anxiety along with possibly crippling catastrophic thinking,  we visualize a positive turn of events and pivot away from those anxious thoughts.

We learn to let it go and lighten up a bit. One could say, “I AM  X-Y-Z  and yadda yadda yadda.”   We keep DBT clear of any religious thinking to make it available to all traditions.  It’s important that atheists, agnostics and all kinds of believers can mingle safely and comfortably here and not feel shamed or left out.

Ironically, the “I AM” code is helpful even if you do not have a spiritual prelude when using it.  (From my experience, however, what I’ve observed over the years is that people who have a conscious connection to the Universe in any way grow faster and have more accelerated success in their cognitive restructuring process.)

On a lighter note…here are some Pi Jokes…

Boylston, MA: “Night Lights: Winter Reimagined” is so Uplifting and Rejuvenating

For those of you in the Greater Boston area, there’s something magical to see at the Tower Hill Botanic Garden.   A variety of  creative displays cover the whole garden, indoors and outside. It is so beautiful, cosmic and exhilarating to walk through at night.

“Night Lights: Winter Reimagined” will be available to visit until 12/30/18 (must purchase tickets prior to going, timed tickets). IMG-6877

Something wonderful is happening…

As I am continuing my ongoing birthday celebration (from 4/21), yesterday a dear friend took me to see Amy Schumer’s new film, I FEEL PRETTY, which I loved.  Thank you Amy Schumer for being so brave, vulnerable, transparent and still zany and hilariously funny.  Yes, you are the carrots in the brownies…(as you shared on Oprah’s SuperSoul Sunday podcast recently).  So great to laugh at the absurdities and incongruities of our plump biosacks  that carry us around here at Earth School.  I FEEL PRETTY is clearly part of the required curriculum for the Liberation Philosophy for Plump People!
Brief back story…
This is how the day went…first I had a long overdue haircut at noon —  and my new hairdresser, Chloe, did an amazing job!  I left her salon feeling extremely pretty.  I even had a few tears in my chair, because my hair has been in a side-braid more often than down on my shoulders for a long time.

Why the hair neglect? Am I too busy? Not caring? Rushing from exercise to office, no time to fuss?  Apathy?  Whatever.  I like my braid, but I have gotten some negative feedback from my sister that it is not flattering.  I wear it anyway. I know my hair looks nice when it’s down, but some days I am not able to get that together.
In Chloe’s salon chair, my tears told me that I missed that part of myself, feeling beautiful and glamorous, and desirable.  I hadn’t felt this way for quite some time it seems. I usually feel moderately acceptable, clean and neat, and I know I look ok, but this haircut took it up more than  few notches…from acceptable to awesome!

Then while I was feeling soooo pretty, I’m watching Schumer’s new film, I FEEL PRETTY, and I had a surprisingly major transformational experience!  (similar to Amy’s character in the movie, but not as dramatic. Will not spoil the story for you, just go see it!)
I suddenly get how my attitude and Belief System (B.S.)  rule my mood, energy, and activation of  this phenomenon of “feeling pretty.”  My BS determines my interpersonal effectiveness,  distress tolerance and ambition. My BS can launch me into the heights of joy and super success or drive me down a slippery slope of negative thinking and despair. For today, I have the skills to reign myself in, but the roller coaster ride of negative BS can be a huge distraction and wasteful of my time and energy.
What are the odds?  Coincidence? Or is the Universe conspiring to turn me the hell around?  Pretty haircut,  followed by seeing the movie I FEEL PRETTY, and then a new neural network explodes in my brain…it’s a G-d Job, for sure!  Best birthday gift du jour…and I know more are coming!
Yes, I get it, I am an irresistible magnet for good people, places, things to come into my life.  My energy is sheer deliciousness and I want to be with people who celebrate me, not just tolerate me…in my plus-sized body. This is just a fantastic news breaker!  I FEEL PRETTY!  YES! Full throttle, all 12 cylinders pretty. A masterpiece of creation. Much needed, part of the beautiful landscape.

Some days may appear to be more special than others, but in fact each day is a special pearl of a day.  Let’s love the day, no matter what…experiment in feeling an attitude of gratitude for each breath you take.

Decompressin’ with Wessan: Walk and Talk Therapy comes to Chelmsford, MA

Since I changed careers in 1999,  morphing from science journalist to therapist, I feel as if I have given birth to three clinical children in this journey…

First, I delivered Therapeutic Laughter for Caregivers (and others) in New York City, which emerged as keynotes, workshops and seminars.  I still enjoy presenting these programs which also include Team Building with Laughter, the Let Go and Lighten Up program and LaughAnanda (laughter meditation).  Each program serves a different sector, for corporate, medical/healthcare, educational, non-profit, and spiritual organizations.

Second, after a long gestational study period,  I delivered Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Groups (DBT) two years ago and currently facilitate two DBT groups in my office in Westford, MA, one daytime and evening group.

Third, and brand new as of June 2017, Walk and Talk Therapy (WATT) was born.  I am very excited about the progress and results my clients are experiencing during WATT.

Over the past several years, every time I read about exercising with clients, I was more intrigued…yes, there is solid science and empirically verified research on the benefits of WATT.

In brief, the motion of walking stimulates the bicameral brain and increases activity between the left and right hemispheres.  This allows people to access more complex feelings and memories, and have the ability to process the sadness, grief or trauma even more effectively while walking. While walking, everything is flowing, and the negative or heavily charged energy from the  traumatic memories can discharge quicker.  (I’m in the process of writing an article on a few of my clients who have had dramatic shifts and turnarounds on these walks.)

RISK MANAGEMENT

I have my clients sign an Indemnity Agreement prior to the WATT, and we discuss the possible challenges that may occur, such as tripping on a rock, or falling for some reason.  For some, this often leads to a lively discussion of their previous adventures and how confident they are in their walking ability.  “Walking around a lake? This is nothing, a piece of cake!”  they say.  For others, the prospect of walking for two miles is daunting, but they understand they can do as much or little of the walk as they want.  We have a choice of several benches for resting along the way with stunning views of the lake.

If you are considering WATT, I strongly recommend it.  As the Scottish-American naturalist John Muir once said, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”
